"Beto" Calls for Stripping Conservative Churches of Tax Exemption

Last Thursday, Democratic Party presidential candidate Robert Francis “Beto” O’Rourke called for stripping churches who oppose same-sex marriage of their tax-exempt status.

At CNN’s “town hall” on LGBTQ issues, O’Rourke told moderator Don Lemon that churches, schools, and other nonprofits should lose their tax exempt status if they oppose same-sex marriage. This is tantamount to declaring war on America’s conservative Christians, Orthodox Jews, and Muslims.

Don Lemon: Do you think religious institutions like colleges, churches, charities, should they lose their tax exempt status if they oppose same sex marriage?

O’Rourke: Yes. There can be no reward, no benefit, no tax break, for anyone, any institution, any organization in America, that denies the full human rights, that denies the full civil rights, of everyone in America. So as president, we’re going to make that a priority. And we are going to stop those who are infringing upon the human rights of our fellow Americans.

Former U.S. Rep. Beto O'Rourke, D-Texas, said during CNN's Equality Town Hall with Democratic presidential candidates that religious churches, colleges, and organizations should lose their tax-exempt status if they oppose same sex marriage.
