California is rethinking its plans to replace real math with woke math. Or is it social justice math? Or maybe, it’s Critical Math Theory.
The notion being that because of systemic racism, math should be taught in a non-racial, non-gendered way. In other words, actually expecting children to learn math is imposing racist values and restrictions on them.
The California State Board of Education board’s reconsideration of the initiative comes after hundreds of former and current experts working in science, math, and engineering, as well as others fields, signed an open letter that criticized the plan. The letter from STEM experts pointed out what a monumental mistake it would be to infect math with politics.
The simple fact is that no matter your color or gender, or if you identify as a man, woman, or transsexual non-binary land turtle, math is math. Wherever you are in the universe, if you have two things and you add two more, you now have four things. It does not matter if they are apples, toll house cookies, Ford trucks, , or snowy egrets. Two and two equal four and teaching someone anything else is at best a disservice and at worst a crime. Allow me to explain.
Refusing a child the tools that he or she needs to be able to reason puts them at the same disadvantage that slaves were under, centuries ago, and allows their overseers to maintain authority over them. Take away a person’s ability to think logically and you essentially take away their freedom. And you make them a slave to whatever political ideas you see fit to lodge in their developing minds.
In Canada, Ontario Premier Doug Ford said the discussion of racism doesn't belong in math classes, confirming the province's decision to back down from a plan to inject anti-racism ideology into its 9th grade mathematics curriculum.
"In math, let's stick with math," Ford told reporters on Thursday, "Other social issues, we can talk about, but let's not talk about it in math."
Adventist Education has continued to teach math as an objective truth, and should. It is objective truth, not a political football to increase the liberal agenda among your children.
