Dear Church Community,

You may be wondering, as I have in the past, what the difference is between Ecumenism and Solidarity. According to author Malachi Martin, ecumenism was a term and practice employed by the Catholic Church to initially reconcile Christians back to Rome by healing Protestant “heretical rifts” that stood between the two. Later, this invitation was extended to other religions, and focused on leveling differences between Christians and nonbelievers. Finally, the net was widened to include the secular community, including “terrorists, Socialists and Communists.”[1] Since these latter groups were not religious, the coming together was then to be called solidarity. Said Martin:

The fundamental struggle in which the Church and all Catholics were engaged was no longer the personal war between Christ as Savior and Lucifer as the Cosmic Adversary of the Most High in the quest for men’s souls. The struggle was no longer on the supernatural plane at all, in fact. It was in the material circumstances of the tangible, sociopolitical here and now. It was the class struggle Marx and Lenin had propounded as the only worthwhile combat zone for humans. Liberation was, therefore, no longer release from sin and its dire effects. It was the struggle against oppression by big capital and by the authoritarian colonialist powers of the West – particularly the United States [Protestantism] as the archvillain of all human history.[2]

I have assembled this two-year timeline regarding Ecumenical/Solidarity events that are occurring in front of our eyes. I am asking you, my church community, please do not wait on our GC leaders to rectify this. Please do something.
