"Thank you for coming to my funeral. Please take care of my family."
Bob (not his real name) had returned home exhausted after attending the funeral of a close family member. He lay down to rest and quickly drifted into sleep.
When he awoke, he found himself looking up into the familiar face of the deceased standing quietly at the foot of his bed. It looked exactly like the loved one he had seen buried only hours before—the same face, the same voice, the same mannerisms.
After speaking those few simple words, the figure disappeared just as suddenly as it had appeared, leaving behind an inexplicable warmth that spread through Bob's chest.
When I later asked him whether he had been frightened, he shook his head, "No. I know the dead are really dead. I knew it wasn't my relative."
His answer was both reassuring and unsettling. If he correctly recognized that the apparition was not the deceased, another question remains. Why should such a manifestation appear at all? What conditions exist in a person's spiritual life that permit the kingdom of darkness to intrude so boldly into the home?
For many years I believed the doctrine of the immortality of the soul was a simple error about death, one that any Christian willing to read the Scriptures carefully could see through. From childhood I had learned the familiar “proof texts” describing the state of the dead.
"For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing... Also their love, and their hatred, and their envy, is now perished...there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave..." (Ecclesiastes 9:5–6, 10, KJV)
The conclusion is clear. The dead know nothing. Their thoughts have ceased. Their love and hatred have perished. They cannot participate in the affairs of the living. The grave is not a place of consciousness but of nonexistence.
The psalmist affirms the same truth: "...his breath goeth forth, he returneth to his earth; in that very day his thoughts perish" (Psalm 146:4).
Death reverses the process of creation. The body returns to dust. The breath of life returns to God. The living soul (with its conscious thought) comes to an end.
The New Testament continues in the same vein. Paul declares that God alone possesses immortality (1 Timothy 6:15–16). Humanity, while not inherently immortal, is able to receive it as a gift bestowed only when Christ returns, when "this mortal must put on immortality... at the last trump" (1 Corinthians 15:51–54).
In Revelation 20:14, death and Hades (the grave) are the final victims of the lake of fire, the last enemies to be destroyed. Then, in the new earth, the promise is fulfilled, "There shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away" (Revelation 21:4).
Death itself will die.
What glorious news! The great enemy that has haunted humanity since Eden will finally be gone forever, and God's redeemed will exist eternally in a world where death is no more.
For years I assumed Scripture revealed these truths simply to correct our understanding of what happens after physical death. But Scripture rarely teaches a truth for only one purpose. Again and again, God uses physical realities to teach spiritual ones.
Circumcision teaches commitment and conversion.
Marriage teaches Christ and His church.
The Sanctuary teaches salvation.
The Exodus teaches redemption.
The Flood teaches baptism.
Could it be that Scripture's description of physical death is also intended to teach us something about the spiritual death every Christian is called to experience? If so, the doctrine of the dead becomes much more than an argument against séances. It becomes a description of Christian discipleship.
That possibility sheds remarkable light on Ellen White's warning. If defeating this deception required nothing more than memorizing a few proof texts, why would she identify belief in the natural immortality of the soul as one of the two great errors through which Satan would "bring the people under his deceptions"? (The Great Controversy, p. 588). She goes further. This doctrine, she writes, "lays the foundation of Spiritualism." Then comes an even more sobering warning: "As Spiritualism more closely imitates the nominal Christianity of the day, it has greater power to deceive and ensnare" (The Great Controversy, p. 588).
That statement changes everything. The greatest danger is not merely believing the wrong thing about death. If spiritualism succeeds by imitating Christianity, then its most dangerous manifestations cannot be Ouija boards, séances, crystal balls, or haunted houses. Spiritualism appears in churches, speaking Christian language, wearing Christian clothing, singing Christian songs, and professing Christian faith.
How can that be? The answer lies in recognizing that God has given humanity two deaths.
One is physical; the other is spiritual. The first comes at the end of earthly life; the second marks the beginning of eternal life. One buries the body; the other buries the old man. It is this second death that baptism proclaims.
Ellen White describes baptism in language that is both beautiful and sobering:
"Baptism is a most solemn renunciation of the world. Self is by profession dead to a life of sin. The waters cover the candidate, and in the presence of the whole heavenly universe the mutual pledge is made. In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, man is laid in his watery grave, buried with Christ in baptism, and raised from the water to live the new life of loyalty to God." (Manuscript 57, 1900, par. 10)
Notice the imagery. Baptism is not merely a cleansing. It is a funeral. The old self is not improved, educated, or rehabilitated. It is buried.
Perhaps this is where we have misunderstood spiritualism all along. We have assumed Satan's “great error” is convincing people that those who die physically are still alive. But what if his greater triumph is convincing Christians that the person who died with Christ never actually died?
If the old man still thinks...
still desires...
still loves...
still works...
then he is no more dead than the immortal soul.
If thoughts perish in the grave, then those who have died with Christ should no longer think the thoughts of the unconverted. If love and hatred perish in the grave, then worldly affections have no rightful place in the heart of one who has been crucified with Christ.
If there is no work after death, why do so many Christians continue in the sinful works of the flesh? The old self was buried with Christ. Its thoughts belong in the grave. Its affections belong in the grave. Its ambitions belong in the grave. Its addictions belong in the grave. The believer has not been called to improve the old man, but to leave him behind.
The pattern is the same throughout Scripture. The Flood gave way to a cleansed earth. The lake of fire will give way to a universe in which righteousness alone dwells. Baptism gives way to newness of life. The baptism of fire completes the work by consuming every remnant of self until Christ is fully formed within His people. God never preserves the old; He makes all things new.
And that brings us back to Bob. The figure standing at the foot of his bed was not his departed relative, for Scripture leaves no room for another conclusion. The dead know nothing and their thoughts have perished; they await the resurrection. But the question that has lingered since the beginning of this chapter still remains. Why was there an opportunity for such a manifestation at all?
Scripture repeatedly teaches that Christ claims every part of the life surrendered to Him: the mind, the heart, the will, the affections.
The old man is buried so that Christ Himself may live within the believer. But what happens when the old man refuses to remain in the grave? What happens when we profess the death of self in baptism while preserving the selfish thoughts, lustful desires, and bitter resentments that were supposed to die? We should not be surprised that the enemy claims every heart where Christ has not been permitted to reign.
Every cherished sin, every protected idol, every unyielded ambition, every corner of the heart withheld from Christ becomes contested ground. The Holy Spirit does not force Himself upon such a person unwilling to die. And wherever Christ is resisted, the kingdom of darkness eagerly presses its claims.
Perhaps this is why Ellen White warned that the “great error” of Spiritualism would most successfully imitate Christianity. The greatest danger is not simply believing that dead people are alive. It is professing to follow Christ while refusing His cross. It is proclaiming the nearness of the Second Advent while embracing Spiritualism. Through this “great error”, some Seventh-day Adventists have unknowingly become Seventh-day Spiritualists.
Only a heart emptied of self can be filled with Christ. Only a life surrendered to His Spirit is secure against the counterfeit power of another spirit.
Bob recognized that the figure before him was not his departed relative. May we show the same discernment when the enemy seeks entrance by a far subtler path—not through the cemetery, but through the parts of our own hearts that we have refused to surrender.
The safest Christian is not the one who merely understands the state of the dead. It is the one who has truly died with Christ.
